When Death Occurs

A compassionate step-by-step guide to assist families in the first crucial hours after a passing. Learn how to respond calmly, arrange immediate help, and manage essential religious and legal steps with professionalism, empathy, and respect for Islamic customs.

When a Muslim passes away, the process of returning them to Allah begins with calmness, compassion, and prompt action. If the death occurs at home, call the police at 999 immediately. The police will assess the situation and, if necessary, transfer the body to the Mortuary@HSA for further review. If a doctor certifies the death, it will be registered electronically with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), and a digital death certificate can be obtained through go.gov.sg/mylegacy-edc.

Next, engage a Muslim funeral director to arrange for body collection, preparation, and burial, following Islamic rites with dignity and care. Burial should ideally take place within 24 hours, as emphasized in Islam.

If the police require a coroner’s review, the family may be asked to identify the body at the mortuary. After release, the funeral director coordinates all permits through the NEA e-portal.

Families should then begin estate administration: locating a will (Wasiat), applying for probate or inheritance certificates, settling debts, and distributing assets under Faraid (Islamic inheritance law).

At An-Naeem, we stand by families 24/7 — guiding them through each step professionally, compassionately, and in accordance with Syariah law.
